ATE Trailers and Jenkins Motorsport - The Winning Combination
The ATE Truck And Trailer Sales sponsored Jenkins Motorsport team continued their winning partnership at Brands Hatch at the weekend (October 29/30).
A podium and fourth place finish for 2011 BTRA Class A Champion David Jenkins at the action packed and drama fuelled final round of the 2011 Delphi British Truck Racing Championship increased his overall lead to 33 points for the season.
David Jenkins started off the weekend in style in his silver MAN TGA with a second fastest time in the Class A qualifying race on Saturday morning.
Later that day the Class B’s had their first points race. To give the massive turnout of fans a real spectacle to watch the race also included the top five qualifiers from Class A (though they were not eligible for points). The faster runners started half a lap behind those from Class B in a rolling start. In an amazing display of speed and driving skill they fought their way through the field to secure strong finishes. Matt Summerfield was the leading Class A runner, slicing through a congested circuit to secure third position while David Jenkins finished fourth overall.
Ahead of Sunday’s first Championship points race for Class A James Jenkins, the Jenkins Motorsport team principal, said: “The trucks on the right hand side of the grid will have the advantage on the first two corners [the world famous drop at Paddock Hill Bend and Druids Bend]. As a result Dave will have to do his best to move in behind Matt Summerfiled, who was on pole, as soon as possible after the start, or better still get to the front at the first corner.
The race started eventfully with three trucks running wide at Paddock Hill Bend on the opening lap with front row starter Jenkins surviving a massive sideways moment following contact from Summerfield. German racer Heinz-Werner Lenz, who was third on the grid behind Jenkins, capitalized on this and stormed through into the lead in his Mercedes Benz. However he soon came under heavy pressure from pole sitter Matt Summerfield [MAN TGX] who had dropped to second on the opening lap.
Summerfield followed closely for a couple of laps before finally finding a way past on lap four and immediately began stretching his lead and a fastest lap of the race.
David Jenkins had a frustrating race. After his moment on the opening lap he recovered to challenge Summerfield early on, until he ran wide at Paddock Hill on lap three, allowing Richard Collett past him.
Jenkins was on a charge determined to fight his way back into contention. However was unable to do so as the race was red flagged after Trevor Martin rolled his heavyweight ERF machine on lap five at Paddock Hill Bend. Jenkins’ fourth place on the track but third place in terms of the championship (with Lenz not running in the British Championship) gave him eight points for the championship and was enough to put him through to the Grand Final, the second points race of the day.
More drama ensued on the first lap in race two of the day (the non championship semi final) when Steve Thomson rolled his Scammel S26 and hit the barriers after Adam Bint (Volvo) clipped him as he came out of Druids Bend. While Thomson was being attended to by marshals and ambulance crews a fire truck that was on its way to the scene hit some diesel on the circuit at Paddock Hill Bend and rolled too. Was this a first for Brands Hatch? The race was red flagged and did not resume.
Because of the previous two races being red flagged the grid for the Grand Final of the day was decided on Sunday’s race times for both the class A and Class B rounds. Because of the variable weather conditions and therefore race times over the two heats there was a mix of both Class A and B at the front of the grid. Jenkins started third on the grid behind Matt Summerfield and the Dutchman Cees Zandbergen in his distinctive “rainbow” Scania (Class B).
Jenkins was quick onto the accelerator at the green light and at the first corner past Zanbergen and tucked himself in behind Summerfield. Lenz made a superb start from fifth place on the grid to move into third. Although David set the fastest lap (on lap 3) with his trademark determination he was unable to close the gap on Summerfield, with Matt eventually crossing the line 5.4 seconds clear of David and Lenz completing the podium
A second place finish in the Grand Final finished the season off in style for the ATE Trailers sponsored Jenkins Motorsport team. The team are now looking forward to a short break before the hard work and long hours needed to prepare the truck ready to defend their Bristish Championship title in 2012.
After the Grand Final, Dave Jenkins said:
“Racing at Brands Hatch was amazing this weekend. The fans were lining the circuit in their thousands for every race. When we were racing round the track it was like watching a Mexican Wave of people surrounding the track; very special indeed!
“It was a great weekend of racing for the team but today it was frustrating for both drivers and fans. We wanted to race and the fans wanted to watch us racing but there is nothing we can do when trucks roll during races.
“With Saturday’s qualifying times and the team’s tyre choices I thought I had the speed to get past Matt in today’s Final. I did get caught up in traffic towards the end of the race but I still don’t think I could have caught him. He had a great race.”
“It was a great weekend for us and a positive end to the season.”
James Jenkins said:
“We were pleased with the weekend’s results overall. It was always going to be a tough challenge to beat Matt Summerfield with his latest spec engine. However we were really pleased with the fastest lap time in tricky conditions during the Grand Final. Matt had the lucky breaks with the traffic and when you are talking a few tenths separating the leading trucks it is always going to be close.”
